The 5-Minute Rule: How to Start When You Don’t Feel Like It

If you’ve ever stared at your workout plan or yoga mat or even just the floor and thought, “Not today, Satan,” - this one’s for you.

Here’s a little secret that’s saved me (and many performers I know) from total inertia: The 5-Minute Rule.

What’s the 5-Minute Rule?

You set a timer for just five minutes. That’s it. Five whole minutes to move your body however it feels good - or even not so good. Maybe it’s a slow stretch. Maybe it’s rolling on the floor. Maybe it’s just lying down and breathing deeply while you negotiate with yourself about whether to get up or not. Now add a leg lift. Haha just kidding; but you could…

The magic is in the starting.

Because honestly? Starting is the hardest part. But once you’re moving - even just for five minutes - something shifts. Maybe you find energy you forgot you had. Maybe you remember why you love moving in the first place. Or maybe, spoiler alert, five minutes is all you wanted today, and that’s totally okay.

Why five minutes?

  • It’s short enough to feel doable, even on your laziest day.

  • It lowers the pressure so your brain stops resisting.

  • It tricks your body and mind into action.

  • It reminds you that movement doesn’t have to be perfect or punishing. It can just be you showing up for you.

Here’s how to try it:

  1. Pick a time in your day when you can steal 5 minutes - morning, lunch break, right before bed.

  2. Set a timer on your phone or watch.

  3. Move however you want. No rules. No judgment. Hot tip: Your favourite Hamilton track WILL HELP YOU.

    • If you’re stuck, start with 10 sit ups, 10 push ups, then a 45 second plank. Repeat. (Bonus points for noticing - yes you are on the floor the whole time; you’re welcome . More energy? Now add 10 burpees. Or not.)

  4. When the timer goes off, decide if you want to keep going or call it a win. Spoiler: Both choices are wins.

Bonus points:

If you feel like it, share your 5-minute move on socials and tag us @thestretchiflex - because sometimes we all need a little cheer squad to keep going!

Remember: You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. You’re human. And sometimes, small moves make the biggest difference.

You’ve got this xx
